Why block paving
Easy to repair
Block paving is made of separate blocks, so if one cracks or gets an oil stain, that block can be lifted out and replaced. The rest of the drive isn't touched.
Patterns and borders
Blocks can go down in herringbone, basketweave or straight rows, with a border in a contrasting colour to frame the drive. Herringbone is the usual choice for drives, because the blocks lock together under the weight of a car.
Looking after it
The sand in the joints keeps the blocks tight and keeps weeds out. It settles over time, so it needs topping up now and then, and a sweep keeps moss down.

Questions about block paving
Do I need planning permission for a block paved drive?
Not if it's permeable block paving, or the rain runs off into a lawn or border on your own land. A front drive over 5 square metres in ordinary block paving that drains onto the road needs planning permission. Ask Gaz which applies to your drive.
Can a block paved drive be repaired?
Yes. That's one of the best things about it: a cracked or stained block can be lifted out and a new one put in, without touching the rest of the drive.
Will weeds grow through block paving?
Weeds can take hold in the joints if the sand gets low. Topping the joints up and giving it a sweep now and then keeps them out.
Do I need a dropped kerb?
If you'll drive over the pavement to get onto the drive, yes, and the council has to give permission first. Each town page on our site says how it works with that council.
