Porcelain, sandstone or crazy paving?

Porcelain

Porcelain slabs are fired at a very high temperature, so they hardly take in any water. That makes them hard to stain, slow to grow moss and quick to wash down, and the colour doesn't fade. They're harder to cut and need a bonding primer underneath, so they cost a bit more to lay.

Indian sandstone

Natural stone, so every slab is slightly different in colour and texture, usually with a riven surface that gives good grip. It costs less than porcelain. Being stone, it takes in water, so over the years it can weather and pick up moss or stains. A seal and an occasional clean keep it looking right.

Crazy paving

Irregular pieces of stone fitted together like a jigsaw. It suits older houses and cottage-style gardens. Every piece is fitted by hand, so it takes longer to lay than square slabs.

Questions about patios

How much does a new patio cost?

It depends on the size, the slabs and what has to come up first. Porcelain costs more than Indian sandstone, both to buy and to lay, and clearing old decking or a broken patio adds time. Send Gaz a few photos and rough measurements on WhatsApp and he'll give you a free price.

Porcelain or Indian sandstone: which is better?

Porcelain if you want a patio that stays looking new with very little upkeep. Indian sandstone if you like natural stone and a lower price, and don't mind it weathering and needing a clean now and then.

Do I need planning permission for a patio?

Usually not. A patio laid at ground level in a back garden doesn't normally need planning permission. A raised patio or decking more than 30cm off the ground does, and so can work at a listed building. If you're not sure, ask your council's planning team before work starts.

Can you take up the old decking or slabs first?

Yes. Old decking and broken slabs come up first, so the new patio goes down on a proper base rather than on top of the old one.

Do you do the steps, edging and borders too?

Yes. Steps, edging and borders are done to match the patio. We also lay paths, fit fencing, turf lawns and build raised beds, so a whole garden can be done in one go.

Which areas do you cover?

We're based in Wigan and lay patios in the towns around it, from Standish, Orrell and Leigh to St Helens, Chorley and Bolton, and further across the North West.
