Driveways in Wigan

Block paving, imprinted concrete, tarmac and gravel. The old drive comes out, and the new one goes down with edging and drainage to finish it off. We're based in Wigan and lay drives right across the North West.

What you get

A new drive that looks sharp from the street and sends the rain where it should go.

  • Old drive dug out and taken away
  • Borders and edging to finish it off
  • Drainage channels where the water sits

Block paving, imprinted concrete, tarmac or gravel?

Block paving

Concrete blocks laid in a pattern over a compacted base, with a border to frame the drive. If one block cracks or gets an oil stain, it can be lifted and replaced on its own. The sand in the joints needs topping up now and then to keep weeds out.

Imprinted concrete

Concrete poured as one slab, then stamped with a pattern and coloured to look like brick, slate or cobbles. With no joints there's nowhere for weeds to grow. It's sealed when it's laid, and a fresh coat of sealer every few years keeps the colour.

Tarmac

Hot tarmac rolled over a solid base. It's quick to lay, good value on a big drive, and takes heavy cars and vans. It's usually finished with a block or brick edge.

Gravel

The cheapest way to make a drive. Rain drains straight through, so it doesn't usually need planning permission at the front. It needs a firm edge to keep it in, and a grid underneath stops it rutting.

Questions about driveways

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

Not usually. In England a new front drive doesn't need planning permission if the surface lets water through, like gravel or permeable block paving, or if the rain runs off into a lawn or border on your own land. If it's over 5 square metres, made of something water can't get through and drains onto the road, you need permission. Ask Gaz which applies to your drive.

Do I need a dropped kerb?

If you'll drive over the pavement or a verge to get onto your drive, yes. The kerb can only be lowered with permission from the council that looks after your road. In Wigan that's Wigan Council, and you apply to them before any work is done. Our areas page has the details for each council we work in.

Which driveway surface is best?

Block paving if you want a classic look and easy repairs. Imprinted concrete if you want no joints and no weeds. Tarmac if you want a hard-wearing drive at a good price, especially a big one. Gravel if the budget is tight. Gaz will tell you what suits your house when he sees it.

How much does a new driveway cost?

It depends on the size, the surface you pick and what has to come out first. Block paving and imprinted concrete cost more than gravel, and a dropped kerb is extra and goes through the council. Send a few photos and rough measurements on WhatsApp and Gaz will give you a free price.

Will you take the old drive away?

Yes. The old drive is dug out and taken away before the new one goes down.

Which areas do you cover?
