Timber, slatted or composite?
Timber panels
The standard garden fence: timber panels between posts, usually with gravel boards along the bottom so the panels aren't sat in wet soil. It's the cheapest option, and a coat of treatment every few years keeps it going.
Horizontal slatted
Timber slats run sideways with small gaps between them. It looks modern, lets a bit of light and air through, and suits a new patio.
Composite
Made from wood fibre and plastic, so it won't rot, split or need painting. It costs more up front than timber, but after that it just needs a wipe down now and then.

Questions about fencing
Do I need planning permission for a new fence?
Not usually, as long as it's no more than 2 metres high. Next to a road used by traffic, or the pavement beside it, the limit is 1 metre. Listed buildings and some estates have their own rules, so check if you're not sure.
Timber or composite fencing?
Timber if you want the lowest price and don't mind treating it every few years. Composite if you never want to paint or treat a fence again.
Can you do the fence with a new patio?
Yes. We lay patios, paths and lawns as well, so a whole garden can be done in one go.
